Our brickworks service

Garden walls carry more than people think, particularly retaining walls, which hold back the weight of saturated ground behind them. Every wall we build goes off a concrete foundation dug below the topsoil to firm ground. Retaining walls get weep holes and drainage behind them so water can escape rather than pushing at the back of the wall, which is the single most common reason garden retaining walls lean. Coursing is set out against the existing brickwork where there is any, and the pointing is finished to match rather than left flush by default.

Our process

How it works

  1. 01

Tell us what you want to change

Call, message or send the form. Photos of the garden as it stands now are the fastest way for us to understand the job.

  2. 02

    We visit and take levels

We look at levels, drainage, access and what is already there, then talk through what is realistic in the space and the budget.

  3. 03

    You get a written quote

Each part of the work is priced separately, so you can see what the paving costs against the turf, the fencing or the walls.

  4. 04

    We book a start date

We agree a date, confirm access for machinery and skips, and let you know how long the garden will be out of use.

  5. 05

    We finish and clear up

Waste goes, the site is swept, and we hand over anything you need to know about looking after new turf or planting.

Why choose us

Why choose us for brickworks

  • A family-run team, so you deal with the people doing the work rather than a call centre.
  • The groundwork goes in before the surface, which is what decides how long the job lasts.
  • Driveways, paving, walls, fencing and turf are all in-house, so the levels and finishes line up.
  • A written price with the materials named, so you can compare it properly.

What affects the price

No two jobs price the same. These are the things that move it most:

  • The length and height of the wall
  • Whether it is a free-standing wall or a retaining wall, which is a heavier build
  • Brick choice, and whether an existing brick has to be matched
  • Foundation depth once the ground is opened up
  • Piers, pillars, copings and any ironwork built in
  • Access for materials and for removing spoil

Areas we cover

We take on brickworks across Mansfield, Nottingham, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Alfreton, Heanor, Ilkeston, Shirebrook and Clay Cross.

FAQs

Brickworks FAQs

Why do garden retaining walls lean?

Almost always because there is no drainage behind them. Saturated ground is heavy and it pushes. Weep holes and a drainage layer behind the wall let the water out instead.

Can you match my existing brick?

Usually we can get close. Send a photo and we will tell you what we think it is. An exact match on an older house is not always possible, in which case a deliberate contrast often looks better than a near miss.

How high can a garden wall be?

The same planning limits apply as for fences, so two metres at a rear boundary and lower next to a highway. Retaining walls above a certain height also need designing rather than just building, and we will tell you if yours is one.
