Driveways services

Our gravel driveways service

A gravel driveway that scatters into the road and grows weeds by the second summer was almost certainly tipped onto bare ground. We dig out, lay and compact a sub-base, put a geotextile membrane over it, and restrain every open edge before the decorative stone goes down. That keeps the gravel out of the subsoil, stops weeds pushing up through it, and keeps the stone at the depth it should be rather than letting it migrate into ruts.

What is included

What you get with gravel driveways

Everything below is part of the quoted price rather than an extra added on afterwards.

  • Excavation and removal of spoil
  • Compacted sub-base to take vehicle weight
  • Geotextile membrane between the base and the decorative stone
  • Edgings or timber restraint on every open edge
  • Decorative gravel spread and levelled to an even depth
  • A bound or paved threshold at the road edge where the driveway meets the pavement

Our process

How it works

  1. 01

    Tell us about the job

Call, message on WhatsApp or send the quote form with your postcode and a rough idea of the area. A photo or two helps us picture it before we arrive.

  2. 02

    We come and measure up

We visit, measure the area, check access for machinery and materials, and look at where surface water currently goes.

  3. 03

    You get a written quote

The price is set out in writing with the materials named, so you can see exactly what you are paying for and compare it against anyone else.

  4. 04

    We book a start date

Once you are happy, we agree a date that suits you and tell you what to expect on site, including where the skip and materials will sit.

  5. 05

    We finish and clear up

The job is finished, the site is swept and cleared, and we walk it with you before we leave.

Why choose us

Why choose us for gravel driveways

  • A family-run team, so you deal with the people doing the work rather than a call centre.
  • The groundwork goes in before the surface, which is what decides how long the job lasts.
  • Driveways, paving, walls, fencing and turf are all in-house, so the levels and finishes line up.
  • A written price with the materials named, so you can compare it properly.

What affects the price

No two jobs price the same. These are the things that move it most:

  • Area and depth of excavation
  • The stone you choose, which varies a lot in price
  • Edging material and how many open edges there are
  • Whether a gravel grid or stabilising system is wanted
  • Any paved or bound threshold at the entrance

Areas we cover

We take on gravel driveways across Mansfield, Nottingham, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Alfreton, Heanor, Ilkeston, Shirebrook and Clay Cross.

FAQs

Gravel Driveways FAQs

Will the gravel end up all over the pavement?

Not if the edges are restrained and the entrance is dealt with. We usually pave or bind the first stretch at the road edge, which is where stone gets carried out by tyres.

Do weeds grow through gravel?

Seeds blow in and germinate in the dust that collects in the stone over time, so no gravel driveway stays completely clear. A membrane underneath stops weeds coming up from below, which is the harder problem to fix later.

Is gravel suitable if the drive is on a slope?

On a steep slope loose gravel tends to travel downhill. A stabilising grid holds it in place, or a bound surface may suit better. We will tell you which when we look at the site.
